Being present

Probably one of the last dispatches from this trip.

I’m sitting in a Pret, the second one in the past 48 hours. You would think that cranberry, raspberry and pomegranate juice would be good, wouldn’t you? Their choice of music in here is better. You can never go wrong with the Gorillaz.

The train back to London is at 5pm. Yesterday around this time we were hastily rehearsing our slides for the presentation and my mindfulness was challenged by the task of using clear tape to stick an A1 poster to a foam board. Tearing tape without scissors is not easy and it can frustrate even the most patient of us. I ended up slightly botching the position of the poster on the board - the level of detail that a Japanese crafts master would not tolerate. I caught myself rushing and not being mindful during the task and made a mental note to approach it differently next time. What’s a recent task that you could’ve been more mindful about?

As opposed to the digital world, in the physical world one needs to “measure twice, cut once”. But that also reminded me of what a friend who runs an art foundry said: “A great craftsperson is someone who can repair a mistake and you wouldn’t even know they did it”.

Unless you’re working with software, measure twice, cut once. What am I saying, it’s relevant even then.

Be here, now
