Apricots, Pears & Peaches
This book is an experiment in preserving a family legacy. Instead of formaldehyde or brine, we used archive letters, interviews and sprinkles of imagination to bring the essence of a family’s adventures over 3 decades to life.
Moritz is aboard the Hindenburg’s 1937 final flight. His eleven siblings are the target of Hitler’s murderous intentions and he is set on doing something about it. His nephew, Günter is a 9-year old boy trying to make sense of Nazi Germany. We follow them through Kristallnacht, British internment camps and dealing with the Berlin Wall decades after the war. Cameos include a brother more concerned with his furniture than escaping, a cousin crashing a plane in Switzerland and an English lady frustrated with Moritz's brothers.
I’m not a member of the family, but the process inspired me to look back at my own family history. I hope it has a similar effect on you.
Where to get it
Read the first two chapters here. We printed a first edition of 100 copies for family and friends. We'd like to print more as interest in the book grows (not doing print-on-demand because of the specific design of the book, especially the cover).
You can also read my reflection on making this book in 4 months.
If this sounds like a book that you'd like to read, let me know below. Once we hit enough interested people to make it financially viable, I'll set up a Kickstarter.
